When you have sensitive skin, it can sometimes feel as though your complexion is conspiring against you. One minute it’ll be fine and the next, your face is red and irritated — thanks to a tough workout or hot shower. Or, if you’re particularly unlucky, a new skincare product will leave you with an outbreak of pimples or hives.

But for the delicate petals among us, there is a silver lining. Having sensitive skin is like having a natural radar for products that aren’t so good for us. If a product irritates sensitive skin, it’s usually because they’re loaded with harsh, abrasive ingredients like chemical fragrances and sulphates. While these may not cause a reaction in those with ‘normal’ skin, that doesn’t mean they’re good for them — or the environment.

Here are 5 products every person with sensitive skin should have in their collection:

1. Rinse-free cleanser

When you have hyper-sensitive skin, the last thing you want to do is irritate it further by rubbing or rinsing it with hot water. That doesn’t mean you should skip cleansing altogether, though – as it’s an important step to keep your skin clean and clear! Instead, opt for a gentle, no-rinse formula. Some common types are cleansing gels, micellar water and cleansing oils. Instead of rinsing them off with water, you simply wipe it with a tissue or in some cases, leave it on.

2. Enzyme scrub

It can be tempting to avoid exfoliating products when you have sensitive skin, as the rough microbeads can lead to a reaction. However, exfoliation is key to radiant skin, as it sloughs off the dead skin cells. Enzyme scrubs are a great alternative, as they tend to be quite gentle and contain natural ingredients that help to break down the dead skin cells.

3. Fragrance-free body wash

If your skin is on the sensitive side, picking your body wash purely based on scent is unfortunately out of the question. Often, their fruity aroma is a result of synthetic fragrances, which can wreak havoc on irritable skin. Instead, go for a body wash that is specifically formulated for sensitive skin and either fragrance-free or naturally scented by ingredients like coconut or fruit extracts.

4. Aloe vera gel

If there’s one thing every person with sensitive skin should have in their arsenal, it’s definitely an aloe vera gel. The versatile product is extremely cooling and soothing, making it an absolute godsend for irritated, dry or sunburnt skin.

5. Low allergy washing powder

It’s not just your skincare you need to think about when you have sensitive skin. Washing your clothes in chemical-laden products can lead to itchy, inflamed skin and rashes. Aware Sensitive’s low allergy formula is free from common additives like fragrances, optical brighteners, dyes and enzymes — making it perfect for even the most sensitive skin.
